You might have heard of microneedling or INTRAcel Pro RF microneedling, but have you heard of the latest approach? Introducing SkinPen. This handheld device is small but mighty, giving incredible results to target a range of problems, simply by promoting skin healing. Read on to find out 5 ways SkinPen – a treatment we offer here at our Suffolk skin clinic – could help improve your appearance.

1. Wrinkles

Ageing is inevitable – wrinkles aren’t. These lines and creases can be caused by lifestyle factors such as a smoking habit, and regular and/or prolonged exposure to UV light (whether direct sunlight or the use of tanning beds). Repeated facial movements can also cause wrinkles and lines to pop up, especially as ageing can cause your skin to be less firm and flexible.

SkinPen microneedling works to rejuvenate the skin, boosting the production of collagen and elastin, elasticity and firmness are restored in the skin, helping it to appear less wrinkled and dry.

2. Volume loss

Many things which cause wrinkles can also cause loss of volume, such as smoking and sun exposure. As less collagen is produced over time, areas of the face can start to suffer from a lack of structural support, which gives a sagging, sunken or hollow appearance.

SkinPen microneedling helps remodel elastin and collagen in the skin, which can cause the skin to become firmer and tighter. We may recommend using other treatments in tandem, such as dermal fillers, to maximise effects.

3.  Stretch marks

Stretch marks are tiny tears in the skin, caused by times of rapid growth (such as puberty, pregnancy or weight gain) and fade from red or purple lines to silvery streaks. Though the marks do become less noticeable over time, SkinPen microneedling can help with this process by prompting the skin’s healing and renewal process.

4. Acne scarring

Lots of us develop acne during our lifetimes – but living with scarring, an after-effect of the condition can attack our confidence and self-worth. There are lots of different types of acne scarring, including:

  • Ice-pick scars – these have a pitted appearance
  • Hypertrophic (keloid) scars – these look lumpy and uneven
  • Rolling scars – these give skin a wavy and uneven appearance
  • Atrophic scars – these look indented and include boxcar scars (box-like depressions)

SkinPen’s regenerative abilities help with skin healing, which in turn can give skin a more smooth look, and so reduce the appearance of scarring.

5. Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is often thought to be characterised by large patches of discolouration in the skin, but it can present in many ways, including:

  • Rosacea
  • Freckles
  • Birthmarks
  • Melasma
  • Age spots

The cause is always the production of melanin, which gives skin its pigment. Encouraging the skin’s wound-healing response through SkinPen microneedling can help lighten areas of pigment and boost your complexion.
