The latest, greatest facial aesthetics treatments – that’s what we promise here at Rebecca Taylor Aesthetics, your Suffolk skin clinic. In this post, we talk about microneedling, a procedure that’s only increasing in popularity.

What is microneedling?

It’s a procedure that gently pricks and pierces the skin to promote skin healing. This can increase collagen production, known for giving skin its elastic, bounce-back quality. As we age, we lose collagen – which can create a saggy appearance – so by targeting skin laxity, we can help create a firmer, more youthful look.

At our Suffolk aesthetic clinic, we offer two different types of microneedling: SkinPen, a handheld microneedling device that helps increase skin quality, and INTRAcel Pro RF Microneedling, which combines microneedling with deep radiofrequency to reduce scars and promote the skin’s vitality.

Does it hurt and is it safe?

Yes, it’s a safe procedure – we wouldn’t offer anything that wasn’t! Some people find microneedling treatment uncomfortable, but the needles used are extremely fine and a numbing agent may be able to be used on the skin. Of course, there may be certain people who aren’t eligible (such as pregnant women), so a consultation is always the first step on your skin journey.

How can it help me?

Aside from tightening and firming skin, you could benefit from a brighter complexion, improvements in scarring (e.g. acne) and refining of lines and wrinkles. Please note that your best option for microneedling treatment is to book in with a reputable clinic – while you can try at-home rollers, they aren’t as effective.
There are also other areas where microneedling could give you huge skin benefits, from targeting uneven tone to working on the appearance of large pores and even taking on sunspots.

Finally, evidence suggests that the treatment may be effective in other areas of the body and possibly in improving the appearance of other concerns, such as stretch marks.

Is there any downtime?

No, because the procedure is minimally invasive.  However, there may be some side effects in the early days, such as:

  • Bruising or redness – though these can be disguised with make-up
  • Sun sensitivity – we always recommend wearing sunscreen, but it’s even more important following microneedling treatment
  • Tenderness – any pain or discomfort you experience can be managed with over-the-counter painkillers, such as paracetamol, though you may need to speak to your doctor about this
